COMING TO STAY OR STUDY IN LONDON?

London is a bustling city with a lot to offer. In terms of money, it can be very expensive.
Like any developed city, London is fast-paced and can be very intimidating to a visitor. It is essential to know these few factors that may help you get started with less stress.
NETWORK
It is beneficial to network effectively so that by the time you get here, you at least know a few things about the place. With the Internet, it is so much easier to get to know people in different places. I would personally recommend logging on to Face Book and making friends with people in London. Ask them what they would recommend in terms of neighborhoods to live in. Of course this will be in proximity to where you are studying. Gas and electrical companies can be very dodgy, so it is essential to get recommendations from people living in London. Ask which Banks are student friendly, especially to your school. The beauty of Social networks is that you can actually find a group that hosts students from the school you are going to.
BANK ACCOUNT
Familiarize yourself with the requirements banks put out for students, once here, get this done immediately as it can take time. If you are on a scholarship, then you will certainly need an account within the first month of arrival. Communicate with your funding body so that you get as much information and support as possible.
MAP IT OUT
Log onto the Internet and familiarize yourself with your area, landmarks around it and the transport system. The Transport for London (www.tfl.gov) will be a great starting point. Assimilate journeys from your school to places of interest. Take note of the Train system (called the Underground/Over ground here). Buses are reliable but take longer; the Tube (Train) is quicker but more expensive and may not service some areas. You will need an Oyster Card-, which you can buy from a Station. This card can be recharged and is cheaper and more convenient than buying daily tickets. Find out about The Student Oyster Card from your school, this will get you a 30% discount.
Besides becoming familiar with the city, you can also make a couple of friends before you are even here! Be proactive be prepared at all times. Reach out and you will find the transition so much smoother.
